Good Morning Everyone and Happy Friday!
It’s a beautiful sunny but cool morning here in New York City. I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the rejuvenation of Spring.
Some exciting news: today’s newsletter is my 100th post here on Substack!
I’d like to thank you all for reading and supporting Circles In Space. I very much enjoy sharing and discussing with you what I’ve been reading, hearing, and seeing over these past two years.
For those of you who are new here, Welcome! My name is Keith and every Friday I share Five Bullets worth checking out including music, books, history, art and much more. I’m always eager to learn more and hear what’s inspiring and interesting to you so please leave a comment and let’s discuss! I’ve also written about NYC history, science-fiction and journaling and plan to write more long-form posts. I’m just getting started here at Circles In Space.
This week’s Five Bullets:
Archaeology: “Here was this vast jungle that everyone thought was nearly empty. And then, when we peeled off the trees, there were human signatures everywhere.” With the help of Lidar technology, National Geographic uncovers Mayan ruins hidden in the jungle, causing archaeologists to rewrite their understanding of this ancient civilization.
NYC: Ever wonder what those steam funnels located around Manhattan are used for? Utility company Con Edison pipes 400°F steam from power plants to 1,500 buildings across Manhattan for heating, cooling, and other uses. Sometimes the steam pipe breaks or leaks, venting out of the nearest manhole cover so Con Ed crews place funnels to guide the steam up and away from the street.
Photography: Opening next month at the Brooklyn Museum Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm includes McCartney’s never-before-seen photos of the musician’s life during The Beatles first U.S. visit.
Science: Just in case you haven’t heard, there’s a total solar eclipse happening over North America on Monday! During a solar eclipse the moon passes between the earth and the sun, partially blocking out the sun revealing the sun’s corona. If you’re in the New York City area, the eclipse will begin at 2:10pm. There won’t be another solar eclipse until 2044 (and the last one was 99 years ago) so grab your eclipse glasses and take a look!
Writing: I found this Haruki Marukami essay while looking for an Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers t-shirt. Marukami writes that he was a lover of jazz before becoming a novelist and jazz taught him to capture his own voice and rhythm and to explore writing through improvisation. Here’s a photo of Marukami’s extensive vinyl collection.
Happy 100th Anniversary! Your newsletters make my Friday morning commute so much brighter! Do you have any favorite Friday bullets, or ones that you're most proud of?
