Hello and welcome friends to this Friday’s newsletter from Circles in Space where each week I share five interesting things.
I hope your week has been going well! Here in New York, I’ve been enjoying this beautiful month of October when the temperature is cooler, the leaves are changing colors, and the days are getting shorter. Over the past week, I’ve spent much time in nearby New York City parks, thinking about the important roles parks play in our lives as well as their histories. During the fall months, there’s nothing better than getting out for a walk, spending some time outdoors and doing some writing over a cup of coffee or tea.
All right, on to this week’s topics:
In the photo above, a 63-foot Redstone rocket sits in the main concourse of Grand Central Terminal. The rocket was installed on July 7, 1957 and displayed for three weeks. The stunt was to alleviate public fears during the Cold War.
Anna May Wong, Hollywood’s first Chinese-American film star, will be on the U.S. Quarter. Wong (1905-1961) appeared in 60 movies with a career spanning the Silent Era to Technicolor. She joins Maya Angelou, Sally Ride and others as part of the American Women Quarters Program.
Bodies in the Cave details the complicated process of discovering Indigenous remains in a Texas cave located on private land. If you’re interested in reading more on this topic, check out John Jeremiah Sullivan’s article Unnamed Caves.
Ever wonder how a book gets written? Ryan Holiday, author of a series of books on stoicism, describes his writing process for Discipline is Destiny. Holiday shows the day-to-day grind of turning his notated index cards into chapters.
Australian rockers King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard perform TONIGHT, Friday Oct. 21 at Forest Hills Stadium (a former tennis stadium turned concert venue in Queens). Gizzard’s wide range of music, from garage-blues to psych-rock to metal, always has that distinct KGLW sound and with 22 studio albums of material to choose from, the show will surely melt faces and blow minds. Gizzard is joined by UK prog-punk rockers black midi, Gizzard accomplice Leah Senior, and DJ Jonathan Toubin.
