Happy Friday everyone! Welcome back to Circles In Space, where each Friday I share five things I found interesting. This week’s topics:
Wondering what’s up with the cassette above? I’m currently in the process of demoing ideas for an audio version of this newsletter. Don’t worry! It won’t be in cassette format! You’ll be able to listen (or read) on the Substack app. Let me know in the comments what you’d like to hear.
While thinking about audio newsletters, I revisited one of my favorite podcasts, Song Exploder, which explores how a song is made, from simple voice memo to muli-tracked recording. I listened to the Thundercat and Nine Inch Nails episodes this week. Recently released Book Exploder follows the same concept, with writers breaking down their process.
I can’t get enough of The Writer’s Desk, a collection of Jill Krementz’s black-and-white portraits of authors at their desks. Seeing Joan Didion, Kurt Vonnegut, Stephen King and more at their workspace is endlessly inspiring. RIP to David McCullough who passed this week and can be seen working in his shed on a old Royal in the documentary California Typewriter.
Thanks to the instagram Meanwhile Back in Queens, I learned that all New York City Parks basketball rims are made in Queens! Growing up in Queens, I spent many hours playing at these rims as a kid.
After seeing Jordan Peele’s NOPE recently, I’ve been on a UFO/aliens deep dive. Check out ‘high-strangeness zine’ The Observer’s in-depth post on the backstory behind the UFO in NOPE (warning: spoilers). If you want to go even deeper, watch Jeremy Corbell’s documentary Hunt for the Skinwalker for more paranormal stories which seem eerily familiar to NOPE.
Got something to share? Drop me a comment below.
That's all for this week! As always, thanks for reading and have a great weekend!
Until next time,
KW
